The world's smallest breed of dog is usually said to be the Chihuahua but this depends on how you measure ‘smallest’. The current record is shared by a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire terrier. Danka the Chihuahua is 7.4 inches (18.8 cm) long while Whitney, the Yorkshire terrier is 3 inches (7.3 cm) tall at the shoulder.
The smallest dog on record was a Yorkie owned by Arthur Marples of Blackburn. It was 2.5 inches high at the shoulder, 3.75 inches long from the tip of its nose to the root of its tail, weighed 4 ounces, and died in 1945.
In August 2003, park officials suspended a programme designed to keep pigeons at bay in Bryant Park, near Times Square in Manhattan, after a hawk named Galan swooped on a pet Chihuahua. ‘I believe the bird mistook it for a rodent and pounced on it,’ said Galan’s falconer. The dog was not seriously injured, and recovered from its ordeal.

He was pursued by General ‘Black Jack’ Pershing through the mountains of Chihuahua, but not caught. This was the campaign during which General Patton saw his first action.
The word Chihuahua is thought to derive from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word Xicuahua, meaning ‘dry, sandy place’. Though it is the largest state in Mexico, covering 12.6% of the country, it contains only 3.13% of the population.
Chihuahua cheese is a pale-yellow, semi-soft cow’s milk cheese from Mexico. It has some similarity to cheddar and is called queso asadero (‘roasting cheese’) because it has good melting properties, becoming soft and stringy when heated.The production process involves stretching the cheese into long ribbons and rolling it up like a ball of wool.
Both the dog and the cheese are named after the largest state in Mexico although there is no archaeological evidence that that’s where the dogs originated.
